Distances/Route / Walking / Safety & Stewards / What to Bring with You
Distance
On Saturday 24th May, we leave
Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Havelock Road, Southall UB2 4NP
in the morning at 10.00 pm and walk along the Grand Union Canal to
Jamia Masjid (Ghausia) and Islamic Centre, Diamond Road Slough SL1 1RT
The walk will be approximately 10 miles.
Walking
Walkers have responsibilities: for example, they must be able to walk the distance at a reasonable walking speed and be properly equipped. Trainers are very good for walking, providing a spring in your step. Whatever you wear, make sure your footwear is suitable and will last the distance. Be sure to bring a waterproof, too.
You may want to bring a small rucksack or bag with a few basic supplies: waterproof, treats such as chocolate or mint cake, a high energy drink, water etc., and any medication that you may need to take during the day.
The arrival time is based on getting people to the end of the walk at a reasonable time, and so the departure must be prompt.
Safety & Stewards
Walking Along the Canal
Walking Along the Road
Stewards
Walking along the canal: We will move in teams of 20 with 2 stewards per team. Consequently, no walkers will be more than a few feet away from a steward with throwing line and first aid training. The canal is wide enough for two walkers to walk next to each other for the majority of the canal walk.
The Stewards are there to act in your best interests, and this may involve them asking you not to do things they consider dangerous or harmful to those around you. Please respect their judgements, and don’t hesitate to contact them if you need assistance or information. They will have details of stopping places, distances etc.. The main Stewards will have mobile communication with each other and emergency services, and we will also have first-aiders travelling with us at all times. If you are having difficulty walking, please contact one of the Stewards.
